China sees no chance of climate deal: source

ABC News: China has told participants in the UN climate change talks that it sees no possibility of achieving an operational accord this week, an official involved in the Copenhagen talks says.

Dozens of heads of state are descending on the Danish capital to address the December 7-18 conference and hope to sign on Friday a new pact to tackle global warming.

The official, who asked not to be identified, says China is instead suggesting issuing “a short political declaration of some sort”, but it is not clear what that will say.

The official says negotiations are continuing to try to reach a breakthrough that will still allow an operational agreement to be signed.

The official says the sticking point for China appears to be a process issue.
