The leaders of the Extinction Rebellion climate group have threatened the Labour Party with cyberattacks for supporting an aviation industry bailout.

In a letter addressed to Jim McMahon, the shadow transport secretary, the activists vowed to target the party with “direct action protests” if it persisted in its calls for the government to save Virgin Atlantic from collapse. The same warning was sent to the Liberal Democrats.

Rupert Read, one of the co-signatories, told The Times that the group was looking at ways of causing the party “difficulties digitally” and would pursue “physically-distanced actions” at its headquarters, adding that there was a sense of “rage” among campaigners.
